My husband and I are on Social Security and neither got this email. This email that we never got nevertheless is a terrible, terrible precedent. We all have been told for years that the Social Security Administration does not send emails and for seniors, this was a foolproof way to avoid scams. They have just trashed that.
Sharon, your heart for people is just such a comfort, especially as it has been such a sad weekend. Thank you for taking the time for this live.
I agree, I would welcome additional healthy parties. But Elon’s America party is of zero interest to me. I read a bit of his x exchanges, and a party that includes “guns and crypto” as two main causes doesn’t speak to me at all.
Holding out hope that we can build more parties, so that more Americans can feel at home and faithfully represented by them.
The SSA email was a political stunt and a blatant lie to fool senior citizens into thinking they will receive a tax break. And, the email was paid for by TAXPAYERS, as indicated in the small print at the bottom of the email.
My job is to administer assessment testing for TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families-formerly referred to as “the Welfare Program”) participants in my home state, and my program is closely linked with our state’s Adult Education program. This is in part because many of our adult recipients are in need of job training and further education to be able to improve their chances of gaining and retaining a job. Unfortunately however, funds for adult education programs countrywide are also tied up along side of the afterschool care and ESL funding “review”. Because it doesn’t affect children, this isn’t getting nearly as much press, which I totally understand, but it feels very ominous to potentially be defunding, and for the moment at least choking out, adult education programs while those same adults are soon going to be required to fill activity hours, and states won’t have the access to funds for education and job training services that provide those same activity hours. As a resident of a state which vies annually for the position of lowest adult literacy rate in the country, and also as someone who values and esteems (and is friends with many of) my coworkers who, as of July 1, have been told not to return to work indefinitely, this situation feels unjust and hopeless.
I was speaking with a coworker yesterday, who supervises many of the adult ed classrooms in our region, and he told me that our state department received a letter in April, assuring us that these funds had been reviewed and approved and would be released July 1. So far however, that promise has not come to fruition, and education professionals who were sure they had jobs on Monday of last week found out on Tuesday that they very well might not. 😔
Edited to add: I found out through a colleague yesterday that funds for Public Service Training (they coordinate [and in my state, administer] emergency services training and certification in each state) are tied in with Adult Education funding as well. This has meant, for us at least, that for the time being all training and certification of Firefighters, Law Enforcement Officers, Ambulance operators and Emergency Services of any kind are on hold indefinitely. For now, statewide, all public EMS trainers are out of a job and no EMS personnel can move forward with any needed certification or recertification.
Sharon, I listened to this on Tuesday morning, as I finally had some uninterrupted time. It was extremely organized and very helpful on all points covered. I have two beautiful grandchildren off at camp right now, and teared up with you considering the grief of those affected in Texas! Thank you for this “Live”.
PS-I listened to this with AirPods. The sound quality in your new office is amazing! Very clear with no sound interference. It was like we were the only two people in the room. Congratulations on your beautiful space.
I wish primaries/presidential preference elections all happened on the same day. Candidates often drop out before the election in my state, and last year the presidential preference election was canceled in my state.
I think what I want more than anything in future candidates - state and federal - is independent thought and not a blind allegiance to their own party.
Seriously!! It honestly took me a few weeks after the heads of these agencies were named, to realize that ...... oh - DOJ is headed by a morally corrupt person. So is the FBI. So are all of them - those used to be the people that I looked to for trustworthy information. No more!
The SSA email is political propaganda, pure and simple.

They want to keep the poor poor and the uneducated uneducated.
Who is or is not centrist is subjective. For example, Joe Manchin is not my idea of centrist.
The shift in the Overton window only creates the illusion that Manchin or Haley are centrist.
10000000% - Haley being deemed “centrist” because she’s well spoken and articulate is eye popping to me. Her views are not center. At all.

I just want to say, nice name! :)
Yes to more centrist candidates

That is truly terrible. I run out of words to describe how awful all of this is.
I got the email and immediately unsubscribed from all future emails.
Did you mean tax deduction for seniors and not tax credit? A tax credit is very different from a deduction.
Bonnie, I think you are correct. It’s a temporary increase to the deduction (for those over 65).
Bonnie you are correct. It’s a deduction from income not a credit against taxes.

Shameful in regards to withholding federal education funding!
More of this format please!!
The Epstein file story is crazy. How can anybody trust anything in they say. Not saying it’s real or not but just they are all smoke and mirrors
