That was just delightful!! I’m going to have my HS Freshman son watch it. He has been talking for a while about his disappointment that in our school district they only get three years of History education and he’s always been focused on politics since he was old enough to understand the basics. He knows that he wants to do one of three things, teach history (particularly government), be a lawyer or judge, or run for office. I’m all but certain that he would be enthralled by Cullen and would love the chance to ask him about what he did in high school and college to get where he is. Perhaps someday, it will be my son working on Cullen’s campaign! lol Thank you for such a fun and informative episode and for a new show for our family to watch!
Makes me totally appreciate my civic education in high school. I had an excellent teacher in my small high school and he taught about what happened and most importantly why it happened or conditions that lead to it happening. American Government and American History were required in Nevada at that time and were each 2 semester courses. I also took World History.
One thing I have remembered over the years is a discussion about Russian Communism and democracy. We talked about why the Communist Revolution came about and the difficulties of bringing democracy to Russia or other authoritarian countries. I remember the idea that people in these countries were not taught independent thought or even encouraged in that direction. It makes it hard to have a democracy if people aren’t taught critical thinking and discouraged from participating in government. I feel like the current thought of those in power at this time is leaning towards that same view.
I very much took for granted growing up "inside the Beltway" and the absolutely top-notch history/civics education I got there. I was surrounded by history from birth, plus I had excellent teachers who loved to teach. I had a full year of Geography, World History, US History, and US Government. Why we abandoned that for an extra year of PE is beyond comprehension to me.
And to think we are expected to be experts and vote immediately at 18. With 1 year or less!!! So much is in our hands once we are able to have a vote, this doesn’t make sense.
I would say you should run for office but I firmly believe you are doing what you were born to do! You're so engaging as a teacher and your love for both the subject matter and for teaching shine through.
But I hope your son does!
I feel like I learned a lot from Schoolhouse Rock. 🤣🤣🤣
But growing up in the 70s and 80s, I feel like I got a pretty decent civic education. So I’m thankful I understand how the government works. Though I’m definitely still learning the nuances every day and I am thankful to have a trusted resource in you.
1) Do you think emphasizing Civics more in schools will require cuts elsewhere? If so, what do you think should be cut?
2) While I love the sound of "sassy older women" running everything, is there a concern that could concentrate too much power within a few people? I may be wrong, but it sounds similar to what's being tried at the federal level and I don't think that's the best way to run a democracy.

I feel a childrens book series should be in the works.
I actually have one! Can get it here: https://www.blackdogandleventhal.com/titles/ben-sheehan/what-does-the-constitution-say/9780762498475/
I really enjoyed this (and I’m not usually drawn to watching videos). I especially loved the conversation from the 25 - 30 minute mark!

This was so great. Wish we could blast across the country!
I'll definitely check out the series. Thank you both.
I loved this so much.

I had a great high school Civics teacher. This conversation was so encouraging. I’m excited to see the PBS series!😊
