We still need to handle Bald Eagles with care. On the east coast, some are struggling due to overfishing of menhaden (fish that eagles typically feed their young). When there aren’t enough menhaden, hatchlings don’t mature and eventually die.
I have a Bald Eagle nest in my backyard and count it a privilege to maintain a healthy ecosystem for their benefit.
Three great stories, thank you! So happy to hear about them. There is an eagle nest near my house where a pair of bald eagles have been for many years - they’ve had anywhere from 1-3 babies each year! It’s on our morning drive to school and my kids and I always try to spot them - they are amazing!
We live on Lake Erie in Cleveland (Willowick) and the community I live in has a beach path above the water. In the morning i walk my pup and at least twice a week i am able to see an eagle or two getting breakfast. Spectacular! Why did it take so long to name them our national bird?
Completely agree with Diane above. Thank you Sharon for providing an interesting and informative read that helps me feel connected to the goings-on in the world without the anxiety inducing flashy headlines. Very much appreciated!
No matter how many times I tell myself their populations have recovered I’m still in awe when I see eagles on my hikes! (maybe not as in awe as I’d be if I saw an owl 😝).
A note on bald eagles: If you or anyone you know uses lead shot when hunting, please consider alternatives. Hunters apparently opt for lead shot because it's cheaper. The problem is that when eagles feast on carcasses left behind that were killed with lead shot, they end up with lead poisoning.
The Raptor Education Group in Wisconsin works to rehabilitate injured and poisoned raptors, including bald eagles. They're a worthy org to follow and learn from: https://www.raptoreducationgroup.org/
An interesting, calming way to start the day. Nothing to ramp up the blood pressure. Thank you.

Please send more good news on occasion! Helps relieve the stress of the onslaught of negative news.

Headed to my Libby app to find the Jimmy Carter audiobook - thank you for the reference! And for the eagle cam reminder😊
Thank you for a much-needed mental health break, both here and in this week’s podcast.

Just as I’m convinced all is lost, I feel a little encouraged. Thanks for that!
