Any one else have their “go bag” packed and ready? All three branches of government are filled with this twisted thinking. If the Court wasn’t so messed up with these screwy life time appointees I’d think that mayyybe we have a fighting chance. We do not. Add on top of this that Trump doesn’t govern. He’s campaigning. He’s never stopped campaigning. The US is forever changed. But here’s the thing. The Dems are also to blame. I was working with undocumented immigrants in the early 2000’s under Obama and the system was a mess. He did nothing to make it better. So the pressure kept building. And Biden’s 4 years did little too. By the time the Dems tried to pass real border reform they had lost control of Congress and Trump influenced from the sidelines and made sure it didn’t pass so he would win. It never should have gone that far. The Dems have blame in this game too. And from the looks of things I don’t see that we’ve learned a damn thing. Watch. Unless the Dems have changed we’ll see them screw up the messaging war on the government shut down and they’ll be hated even more by voters. MAGA would turn this closure into campaign gold if they were in the minority. Scary times.
I see you’re painting a sweeping picture of the political landscape. In this article, though, I was aiming to zoom in on ICE, the Court’s relevant decisions, and how this new ruling compares to past ones. That’s the scope of this piece.
Absolutely not. No “go-bag” packed here. If all Americans with privilege, and the ability to, leave - who will be left to fight for our neighbors???
We need to GET ENGAGED AND RESIST. If ICE is in your city - help. Go to these sites, help the people being illegal detained, make sure you peacefully protest. ICE is masking up for fear of retribution- remind them of the Nuremberg Trials. What they are doing is illegal & they will be held accountable (eventually). Contact your local ACLU and ask if there is a hotline that you can report ICE activity/vans.
Finger pointing and the blame game isn’t going to help anything at this point. We’re less than a year in to this administration and they are counting on us to throw our hands up and roll over. RESIST.
This is what I mean. You are my Exhibit A for earnestness. I love it. I do. And I have LUCE on speed dial so I don’t need a primer on how to fight. But what I wrote about the go bag was not meant to be taken literally. Like - I literally do NOT have a go bag 😂😂 But too many on our team don’t have the savvy to get the message behind the words which means we are unable to GIVE the message behind the words. We’re too literal 😂 And MAGA messages better than anyone, sorry to say. Like why didn’t we tie the shutdown to the release of the Epstein files (this is an idea just starting to float around social media). Why? It’s dirty. It’s appealing to swing voters. The algorithm loves it. And it makes Dems look like they are fighters. I personally hate it because it should be all about policy but there’s truly some media savvy in that idea that Dems just lack. We are Nixon. They are JFK. It makes me cringe.
I often wonder why it seems that the dems are rudderless- their ineptitude to meet the moment time and time again is why we’re here. We need more than 2 parties - but that isn’t going to help the immigrant population that are being brutalized right now. Right now we need to do the next needed thing - which is to be loud in our peaceful protest - in the streets. Call our reps every single day.
WE THE PEOPLE have more power than any party. And we don’t need to wait for direction from the dems to do the work that we identify as useful.
We no longer have an unbiased Supreme Court. They are 100% ignoring settled law and diving deep into far right territory. It’s perhaps the biggest disappointment, disgrace, embarrassment and incompetence being perpetrated by what should be the greatest court in the world.
It’s so true. I got so angry reading Listening to the Law with ACB walking us through how “unbiased” she is and that she only follows what the law actually says, all the while I was thinking, “lady, you’re lying to yourself.”
What an unfortunate divisive statement. I disagree with their ruling too but declaring someone’s interpretation of the law evil or lazy is not helping persuade anyone that they’re wrong. It does make people dig their feet in and insist that they’re right. Make some friends that disagree with you and realize they’re decent humans trying to do the best thing too.
Heidi, having conversations with my friends that think differently is exactly how I know they are decent and we are both doing our best.
However, I don’t think it’s divisive to point out people who knowingly lie are evil.
I am not calling an interpretation of the law that I disagree with lazy or evil. I welcome the opportunity for a good-faith discussion from which we can both learn.
But I will always call out a lie, and both the people that tell them, and the people that believe them.
oh i’m so happy i’m not the only one arguing with an audiobook. it gives me a headache every time i force myself to listen to it so i can join in the book club conversation
Krause Kim, you are correct, but it is just like everything that has been taken over by MAGA. We cannot continue to state the obvious. We cannot continue to expect any MAGA to follow the rule of law. This article is complaining about contradictions between court decisions.
No they don’t, but it wouldn’t be happening if we had a court with integrity. I think that is a very important message to keep repeating because electing unqualified leaders is how we ended up with this clown court.
I'm tired of legislators and supreme court justices acquiescing to the executive branch. There is meant to be a balance. Sure, they'll agree on some things. But it feels like they're just "phoning it in" nowadays to keep their heads down and avoid the MAGA wrath.
Thank you for this break down. Steve Vladek discussed this in the days after it came out on his substack and that was also an interesting discussion. I appreciate this longer deep dive into the history and where we are now as well!
If the Supreme Court had ruled the opposite in both of these cases— that ICE raids cannot racially profile and kept Affirmative Action, would that also be a double standard?

Angie, I wish I could like this 10x!!!
I wish I couldn't agree with everything you've said here. It seems there are absolutely no guardrails anywhere anymore.
We no longer have an unbiased Supreme Court. They are 100% ignoring settled law and diving deep into far right territory. It’s perhaps the biggest disappointment, disgrace, embarrassment and incompetence being perpetrated by what should be the greatest court in the world.

People tell lies for 1 reason: they’re evil.
People believe lies for 2 reasons:
1. They don’t know better (stupid, lazy, etc.)
2. They want to believe the lies (bc they’re Evil!)
What an unfortunate divisive statement. I disagree with their ruling too but declaring someone’s interpretation of the law evil or lazy is not helping persuade anyone that they’re wrong. MAGA doesn’t care about contradictions!!!!!!
No they don’t, but it wouldn’t be happening if we had a court with integrity. I think that is a very important message to keep repeating because electing unqualified leaders is how we ended up with this clown court.
Krause Kim I couldn’t agree more. Yes, please keep repeating both messages. Both are necessary, because if we agree on one, we must act on the other.
I'm tired of legislators and supreme court justices acquiescing to the executive branch. There is meant to be a balance. Sure, they'll agree on some things. But it feels like they're just "phoning it in" nowadays to keep their heads down and avoid the MAGA wrath.

Thanks for your comment. I haven’t seen the thing you’re talking about, but I’ll have to check his piece out.
It was with Sharon! I think he also had a piece where he discussed this long form. But like my actual book tbr my articles I'm going to read one day are also out of control. https://thepreamble.com/p/live-with-sharon-mcmahon?r=e6im&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
My goodness, how did I miss this? Thank you for sharing!
Genuine question, not trying to be obnoxious.
If the Supreme Court had ruled the opposite in both of these cases— that ICE raids cannot racially profile and kept Affirmative Action, would that also be a double standard?
I fear we're seeing just the beginning of ICE feeling emboldened and empowered by this ruling with this week's heinous raids in Chicago.
