I am going to my first Minnesota District Democrat meeting today as a delegate. I am learning so much. I have a voice and I believe my voice is stronger at the local level. We are focused on getting ICE out of Minnesota and guarding our beautiful boundary waters area. Wish us luck!

Thank you for your service! You are a Patriot.

Pam- thanks for participating!

While I would like to not have ICE in MN I don’t think that’s possible. As we are a border state I think we will always have some here.

Protecting the Boundary Waters I support also. Thank you for getting involved.

Those of us not in MN have heard that ICE has changed tactics since Noem left, not stopped. What are they doing now?

We adopted a cat from the shelter last weekend. They didn't know much about him, but he came in with a hurt leg. An x-ray at the shelter clinic on Wednesday shows a fracture at his elbow and they recommend amputation. I was not at all prepared for that possibility. Our regular vet thinks the leg might be saved, but in a frozen, crooked position. All this back and forth means putting him in a crate for transport which he fights like crazy, traumatizing us both. He has now crammed himself behind furniture where we can't reach him and doesn't trust us, which makes me sad. It's been a very emotional week. All this to say, my mind has been distracted from the war, the ICE cruelties, gas prices, etc. I'm not sure I can recommend this as a strategy, but it definitely changed my focus for a few days.

I’m sure that has been a lot to process. We had a rescue cat who had been shot in the leg that healed in a frozen/crooked position and she was otherwise perfectly normal and happy 🥰 I’m sure this is very hard now, but keep showing her kindness and love and she will know that stability comes from you. 💗

Thanks for your comment. It's really hard right now.

Take care. It will take time . They typically do well with three functional legs which ever route is best for her

Yes - we have a tripod who lost one back leg at 4 weeks due to a dog attack. He recovered amazingly quickly and is now 8 years old and has never missed that extra leg😊 I hope whatever happens with your sweet kitty goes well❤️

Clark Walker's avatar

That's good to know as I would have "thunk" otherwise.

Whichever medical route you choose (amputation or not) animals are resilient and once the cat is no longer in pain he will learn to trust you in time. I can understand how it hurts your heart to see him so fearful and in pain that he hides from you. Your intent was to rescue an animal and provide a good life. I do have issues with the shelter - they should have had him xrayed (at the very least if not treated) so they could give any potential adopter an accurate picture. Truly, shame on them and I hope you have let them know what you've discovered. They may (and offer to help with the costs since the cat was their responsibility. I'm sure they screened you as an adopter - they should have doe the same for the cat.

Thank you for your reassurance.

Yea, you for adopting! Very emotional for sure. Our cat had is leg amputated, and it did not stop him at all. To keep our cat from getting where we couldn’t reach her, we barricaded around the bed, couch, etc. Yes, it looks somewhat tacky, but we can always reach her under a side table. Hopefully once kitty feels better, he will realize he has won the lottery being with you. 😻

Janice Airhart's avatar

Thanks for sharing your story. Right now, he won't trust us enough to give him meds, and fights us when we try to pick him up, so I just don't know how we'd get him through surgery and healing. We're still waiting on the ortho specialist to weigh in on potential amputation. At this point, I'm not sure what I hope for.

Theresa Jones's avatar

That is a lot! And bless you for helping this kitty. We have had many rescues over the years- time, love and patience and your kitty will repay you in kind. Think about how long it took Sharon to bring in her last dog!

I, too, have a feral cat of Siamese mix that has a limp when walking around ,but, can run pretty well when it wants to, surprisingly. Perhaps fixing the broken leg would be better than amputation as I would think that your cat would appreciate still having that leg attached, even if it means limping around for the rest of it's life.

You are welcome. Here's wishing the best for you, Janice. May your days be good ones.

I have been taking a break from social media for lent and while it’s hard to miss friends and family events, it’s been so peaceful to not be mired in anger every day from all the hard things happening because of the derangement of a couple of men. I’m looking forward to the No Kings rally in a couple of weeks.

I am taking a break from facebook. it has greatly reduced stress! I logged in today for a minute to look at something for school. I noticed my feed was filled with my friends again and not "interested in" or other political sways. It was a refreshing few minutes and then I logged off because I was done.

We're expecting 8-12 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow here in the Twin Cities, so it feels like everyone is just waiting for the first flakes to fall. Hopefully our last big snow of the season. Tonight I am gathering with friends for a fondue party. Should be fun! I have only been marginally engaged in the news this week, as I have had to spend my mental energy elsewhere.

I love a good fondue party! Good for you!

Seeking ideas: I am facilitating a Voting Rights session for 100 kids, k-8. I have 30 min max for some interactive learning activity, then will end with a postcard writing session. Last year we built an interactive timeline with volunteers representing key milestones along the path to universal suffrage, taking a step for every 5 years and holding a milestone sign after appropriate number of years had passed. Introduced voter suppression along the way. It was well received and held everyone’s attention. We ended with postcards to our state senators. Save Act 1.0 was simmering. Any thoughts on what to do this year?! I’d like to avoid repeating as most of the kids are the same. Help! Please and thank you!!

Clark Walker's avatar

Kudos to you, Rachel for teaching your kids the voting rights of we Americans that were enacted in years past to assure our Constitutional right to vote in our great country. I have to admit that my high school course on civics was not my favorite subject because the teacher was pretty strict , but, what you are doing sounds very appropriate for k-8 kids and I wish the best of success this year. The challenge is to convey to your students the importance of good government to assure that we Americans can continue to practice the freedoms found within the Founding documents that will guarantee life, liberty and the pursuit of being good neighbors to one another.

Michelle Zimmerman's avatar

My first thought is to teach all kids about the voting process. How to identify a good candidate, where do I vote, identifying my own beliefs apart from others, how to find out where, when and how to vote in my district. I am an election officer and I can't tell you how often I see new young voters having no idea of the basics of voting.

Alex's avatar

Unfortunately, I have no suggestions, but wanted to say thank you! I hope the kids appreciated your thoughtful approach to teaching them and important civics lesson.

I stopped using Instagram over a year ago. I’ve been really missing Sharon’s stories. I know she sometimes does video interviews here and sometimes long form content. Does anyone know if there’s a way to turn her instagram stories into a video that can be posted here?

Emilee Vander Linden's avatar

She’s what I miss most about instagram! I’ve been off the app for over a month now, and it’s really only her content that I ever think about missing out on.

Traci's avatar

Just a thought - in 2020 I created a second Instagram account for myself and only followed Sharon. That helped me immensely to feel like I was getting good information and avoiding the noise, nonsense, and fear mongering.

She and her team have moved to a Daily Brief either here on Substack or via email for the news stories she used to do in her IG stores. I believe you can go to ThePreamble.com to either read there or sign up.

I’m in the same boat. Miss her and not much else.

We had a windy but beautiful day in St Louis, so I went to Art Hill (yes, large hill by the art museum in Forest Park) to attend “Silent Book Club” for the first time. You show up with your own choice of book, read for an hour, randomly chat with others for 1/2 hour, then head out. It was lovely! I’m on their list now and will hear of future events. I don’t know if this is unique or not, but I highly recommend—no prep, low stress and quite enjoyable!

I'm heading to L'Anse, MI in a couple weeks to get away from things for a few days. Any one from that area of the UP have suggestions of things to do? My friend and I love the outdoors and trying new things. We are excited that there could be snow, too!
