The Biggest Cases We’re Still Waiting on at the Supreme Court

My interview with Amy Howe from SCOTUSBlog

June is arguably the busiest month for the Supreme Court. We’ve seen a slew of decisions come out of the Court over the last couple of weeks, and we’ll be getting several more before the month ends.

On The Preamble, I’ve covered many of these high profile cases, including Louisiana v. Callais, which is about a challenge to the way congressional lines were drawn in Louisiana. The question is whether the Voting Rights Act required two majority-Black districts in the state or, alternatively, one of the majority-Black districts was unconstitutionally gerrymandered. You can read one take on the case here, with an opposing viewpoint here.

Then there’s the case involving gender-affirming care for minors. That one involves a challenge to a Tennessee law that prohibits transgender youth from receiving medical treatments that allow a “minor to identify with, or live as, a purported identity inconsistent with the minor's sex.” You can read what I wrote about United States v. Skrmetti here.

We’re also waiting on a decision in Mahmoud v. Taylor, which involves a school district I taught in for years. That case asks whether public schools can use books about LGBTQ+ people in libraries or class lessons if their parents object for religious reasons. I wrote about that one here.

I talked about several of these cases with Amy Howe, the founder of SCOTUSBlog, one of the best sources of information there is on the Supreme Court. Amy has argued cases in front of the Court and taught at Stanford and Harvard law schools. She’s plugged in to everything that’s happening, and our conversation covered a lot of ground. I hope you enjoy it.
