I was born and raised in Wilmington. I was 50 years old when I learned of the Wilmington Massacre. It was erased from classrooms. The story was shared with me by a childhood friend and I began asking others if they knew about. None of us were taught this history in elementary in the 1970s.
How was this possible you ask? Our current administration is working to do the same to many parts of our history. This is such an important story to tell.
I actually came to the comment section to ask if the Wilmington Massacre was taught about in NC schools. It makes me wonder how much of our history has been forgotten or intentionally wiped?
It is now. I don’t know when it was added. Definitely not in the 70s and 80s. There are also historical markers now. I have not lived there since the early 80s but visit often.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for surfacing these important stories of our history. This is another one I never learned about, and the parallels to today are staggering.
All the more reason to politically, at least, keep our country on the right path to a more perfect union from here on and not allow the current regime destroy what we have been building for the good of everyone in America that includes equality, regardless of race, color or creed.
Very sad what happened in Wilmington, North Caroline in 1898 as it begs the question, can it happen today in America? Well, in a less dramatic way so far , it is happening with the Trump bunch today because of the slow boil system of eating away at the safe guards that were built up within our government at least with in the last 80 years with the New Deal and civil rights reforms that have were sorely needed to make our Democracy more equitable for all races in our country. Through much misinformation and disinformation along with blatant lies and extreme hyperbole, the Trump political machine has slowly been dismantling the social guard rails of equality as we speak.
Hopefully, We, The People will determinedly sustain a resistance that will totally obliterate this awful ideological threat to our peaceful coexistence with our fellowman and re-establish a more perfect union within our country that will foster fairness and opportunity for all. After all, this is what America is supposed to be all about and not this current atrocious tripe being offered up in DC now by the White Supremacist's known as MAGA and headed by The Donald.

A lot has been hidden from our text books in public schools in order to shelter our young folk's highly impressionable and delicate minds .
Thank you for writing this article. I had never heard of this coup in 1898. And I agree with your sentiment about what is happening now.

The more I learn about history, the more horrified I am by man’s inhumanity to man. Was there ever a period where people were kind and collaborative?
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and appreciate your quirky friends and family! I’m thankful for Sharon and team!!

I never heard this story before. History sure does rhyme sometimes.
