This makes me think of the mental practice called mindfulness. You are essentially watching your thinking process at all times. Studies have found that it makes people calmer but does have a cost in measures of creativity.

I love the term "self-surveillance" -- it captures so much of what is happening in our culture today. It encompasses not only the self-judging kinds of behavior that you write about here, but also the self-optimizing obsessions encouraged by FitBit and a thousand other such monitoring systems.
