One moment, Harriet Tubman’s strong, determined face was right there at the top of the National Park Service’s webpage about the Underground Railroad. The next moment, it was gone. Along with it disappeared her quote, “I was the conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I can say what most conductors can’t say — I never ran my train off the track and I never lost a passenger.”

The disappearance was more than a minor change to a website. It was a symbol of a concerted and ongoing effort to lie about the truth of American history. And not longer after came an order to begin
