Within days of being sworn in as president, Trump had already secured his first legislative win: the Laken Riley Act passed the House and Senate with bipartisan support, and it was sitting on his desk to sign.
Surrounded by Riley’s family and members of Congress, Trump signed the bill into law Wednesday.
The law is named in honor of the murdered 22-year-old nursing student who was attending the University of Georgia. Last February, Riley was out on a morning run when she was killed by an undocumented immigrant, José Ibarra. Ibarra was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in November 2024.
At the signing, Trump said that Riley’s name will “live forever within the laws of our country.”
The new law implements some significant changes to immigration policy, including two you may not be aware of.
