Yesterday, in KCMO, we pressured Platform Ventures into stopping their sale of a warehouse to ICE for a concentration camp. We made their corporate officers famous, we protested outside their offices, we shamed the local government entity (KC Port Authority) that gave them tax abatements on the building so much that they cancelled future business with them. We made the sale toxic on every level.

Of course, it’s not over. ICE will find another owner willing to sell to them. Rep. Mark Alford has publicly invited them to his neighboring county.

But we have a win. And winning is contagious. Because when we fight, we win!

I’d love to hear all of the ideas for the situation we’re in today.

After the inauguration, we canceled Amazon Prime. Turns out, it’s painless. If we MUST order something from Amazon, we can (I cannot tell you the last time it happened, though)…it just might take longer. It’s been a pleasure to get back out into the stores, especially supporting local businesses.

This article is so powerful and wish it could be shared with a wider audience. Thank you for the motivation

Thank you for this comment: Collective action doesn’t fail because people care too much. It fails when energy isn’t paired with strategy. The good news is that strategy is learnable, adaptable, and contagious. It's definitely worth remembering!!

This is helpful! I have been to so many protests and it often feels like spitting at the firehose of horrible that is flooding our country. My family boycotts target, Home Depot. Amazon, and as many big corporations as we are able. I call my legislators at least weekly, often daily. I support my community. I love hearing of what has worked. I love these comments of what others are doing. This online community feels like a positive resistance!

I tutor English and U.S. citizenship for immigrants through a local NPO. (I also write my senators and representatives, not that that seems to do any good.)

The footprint of my impact is small, I know, but I think of the story of the beached starfish being tossed back into the sea..."it made a difference for THAT one."

I know that letter writing and phone calls work but locally targeted. I don't have the phone tree the laptop or the social media presence to even start. So lack of those tools sucks. Don't live in a major market that even target ING a Target is possible. I want research on my Political candidates, their voting records And more. Where to find that and without spending too much time and Money on just any fight?

Thanks for this article! It is factual and a beacon of hope. I do feel that we need to do more! Perhaps the opportunity will arise soon to be more stategic. Meanwhile, I will keep showing up at the protests, and calling my representatives, voting and talking. Thank you Sharon!!!!

Yes! Let's hurt them where it counts! Not physically but financially, legally, and reputationally.
