I remember the celebration of our country’s Bicentennial. I’d just finished 7th grade. There was so much activity, concerts, celebration in the schools, communities, etc. Today I don’t feel there is anything to celebrate as we approach 250 years. Independence Day has become meaningless.
I was just saying this same thing last week. It was a such an exciting time being celebrated throughout our community and in the schools. The focus was on the HISTORY of our country. I feel like this Anniversary of our Independence is about how many architectural changes this president can make in his ‘vision of grandeur’. I
Someone once said that America is a great idea that hasn't happened yet. This ruling is yet another step backwards from that idea, from a more perfect union.
Thank you so much for writing this. I am a South Carolina resident and wrestle with our state’s complex history. The boiling in my gut that I feel about the redistricting is deep and familiar.
Thank you for this- the courage of Black America is inspiring. This ruling and the immediate actions of the genuinely evil who have power has again been devastating. Trying to find that durable hope that Black America seems to have.
I’m so sorry for your Grandmother, yourself and really for all of humanity. The redistricting done in Memphis is a tragedy. I’ll continue to hope and pray the universe will correct this blatant repression of human beings.
White people like me need to start voting with black people. We need to stand with our neighbors and friends against this racism. If enough white people vote with our black neighbors we can get black voices in Congress.
“What’s happening now — what has been happening — has always been about white supremacy and power.”
For all white Americans - if you don’t know, now you know. Now that you know, it’s our job to stand next to every Black American who is losing their voice in our country and add ours to the cries for freedom and justice. Vote out any local and national candidates who support the dismantling of the VRA. Who support the SAVE Act. Volunteer and donate to candidates who will fight this. Pay attention to down ballot races - since as we are seeing in real time, the states are the battlegrounds for voting rights.
This is a great article and this ruling feels more hopeless than others. For me in a predominantly GOP state, I wonder what can I do? I can speak out but what loveable action can I take?

I feel the same way. I’m embarrassed and ashamed of our country right now. 250 years and I could care less.

Every single person in the county ought to read this. No exceptions.
