Our immigration system is and has been broken for years. It is so offensive that this administration is playing on that brokenness to detain folks who have been living their lives, contributing to their communities and the economy. Now instead of their contributions, we, the remaining tax payers, are paying to confine them. Core Civic and others are certainly lining their pockets from this awful practice.
Thanks, Gabe for the explanations on how the courts are responding. It would be nice if Congress could come together and pursue meaningful immigration reform. That seems like a lot to ask, especially at this moment.
I had a little TL/DR with this one so I’m sorry if this information was in the article: What corporate entity (or entities) are running the detention facilities and are they paid by the prisoner?
Tim, I did not see that information in the article. It is my understanding that these facilities are run by for-profit corporations (Core Civic, is one), and paid for by the federal government (our tax $). The funding is in the Big (not) Beautiful Bill. So this is all driven by greed.
The faint ringing in my ears that appeared when I got about halfway through the article was slightly tempered by the end where it spoke of those actively fighting against the greed, corruption, and cruelty being pushed by our government.
Gabe, thank you for pulling back the curtain. I hate what I see, but at least now I understand it better.
And the better I understand it, the better I can fight it.
Because that’s the whole point.

It makes me sick the way immigrants are being treated. What happened to decency?

Yes. It’s ALL driven by greed. I think we lose sight of that too often. Follow the damn money. Always.
