My family’s experience might give some perspective on your most recent two topics, farms and health care.
My husband is a fourth-generation farmer, and he and his two uncles milk 110 dairy cows and plant 100 acres of potatoes. My husband’s alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m., and on a good day he’ll be back in the house by 7 p.m.
I work part time as a medical assistant. My job is extremely flexible and lets me put my family first without making me feel guilty. I needed this option as I am the one who stays home when the kids are sick.
Our kids are on Medicaid as we don’t make enough money for them to be on our plan. I was embarrassed they were on Medicaid. I didn’t want to use it. I felt poor. I felt like we were failures.
The ACA is the only means of insurance for us. The farm doesn’t offer any, and the premium for my job offers is so high I’d lose money by taking it. I also have a preexisting condition (epilepsy) and need insurance.
