Sharon, I’d love you to explain SCOTUS’ decision about the Voting Rights Act. Wasn’t this originally established to protect the rights of minorities and give them an equal voice in voting?

So, I’m confused how the recent ruling that the map was drawn based on race was against the intent of the original Voting Rights act.

The majority of the Supreme Court justices lied; they are certainly smart enough to understand the intent of the Voting Rights Act as it was passed into law, but they chose to shred it. 🥺

Also what the heck, Tennessee?? My heart is so upset for you.

Thank you 🧡 It was a rough week! I’m still reeling from the absurdity of it all. I live in the middle of the state, just south of Nashville and 3 hours east of Memphis. As of Thursday, I am now in congressional district 9 which used to be basically just Memphis and the lone Democratically held congressional seat for TN. It’s insane!!! I am trying to view it as an opportunity to prove the cowards in our legislature wrong and keep the district blue. But it’s a tenuous hope at best.

Gerrymandering must be eliminated now!

There have been so many issues to be concerned about in the past year and a half, it’s difficult to focus on just one area. The current administration really did go into office with an agenda to change things on every front. What I’m most concerned about is the attack on humanity. Racism and misogyny is the prevalent undercurrent.

A man in my community was yelled at on the trail near my home “All N___ will hang”. My neighbors niece came for a visit and was confronted with racism twice in her short weekend trip. My daughter coaches HS boys volleyball and one of her team members is targeted with racial slurs at multiple schools. These instances are just the few I’ve heard of in the last week. I’m seeing the effects in my community in Utah, but it’s everywhere.

I recently shared a reel put together by a woman of my faith (@latterdaydemocracy - below). The reel is a combination of policy, executive orders, and sentiment from the Trump administration with an adverse impact on POC. It’s overwhelming. I’m heartsick. I’m committed to speak up every instance of microaggression or blatant racism I witness.

I follow Allyson as well. ❤️ Thank you for sharing her powerful reel. After watching it yesterday I felt overwhelmed, heartsick and devastated. 🥺

This week our phenominal high school librarian announced leaving her post at our school because the superintendent eliminated her position. I don't envy the job of a super or principals this time of year, especially when they have to make tough choices for who to keep or let go. I, personally, am being moved to the middle school to teach 5-8 grade computer science/stem...learning that some days instruction will be to 60 5th graders at once and some poor soul, on some day rotation will come from another building to teach my class so I can be doing something else. I guess I came to share this here because the librarian leaving is heavy on my heart, the choice to eliminate that position feels wrong. The Indiana government is really hurting the public school system. It makes me sad.

On the bright side, we do have many resilient students doing amazing things. This keeps us teachers moving forward.

Public schools are under attack. I'm "retired" after 48 years of Sped., but back subbing because SO many unfilled positions.

I just finished reading The Small and the Mighty last night. It was eye opening and so encouraging!

We must remain strong and vote the bums out of office this year and into 2028. In the meantime , let people know who you are voting for by placing a sign(s) in your yard . This is one way to have influence without even saying a word to your neighbors, if you are not the talkative type.

I listened to the oral arguments at the DC Court of Appeals in the Kelly case. It was fun to listen to 3 highly intelligent women questioning the male lawyers. Counsel for DOD must have looked like a deer in the headlights!

Another exhausting news week but I continue to be grateful for the info you provide each day. Hope springs eternal.

This week I read The Hate Next Door by Browning . Non fiction about white supremacy in our neighborhoods. He takes us thru his career exposing white supremacy in Mesa AZ.

Has anyone else read this?

Anyone from Mesa, Gilbert , Queen Creek want to comment?

Nancy's avatar

I'm from Mesa and had never heard of it. Thanks for the heads up!

Can you explain what the VA Supreme Court did to the resent redistricting vote results?

Sarah Seifried's avatar

How in the world are we here in 2026! Tennessee… now Louisiana… WTF Virginia!!!! Please spread the word to everyone to vote! There is power in numbers!

The absurdity of allowing gerrymandering by states without voter approval is only exceeded by the absurdity of not allowing it when voted upon by the people.

I agree but I think like other Supreme Court (whether state or federal level) decisions the question being asked wasn’t is gerrymandering 'ok'. There are some smarter people than me who have broken this down and explained what happened https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYFPIr9RyOw/?igsh=NmRhdHYyZm9pNDZn

Do I think it wil end up at SCOTUS? Yes. It will be interesting to see if they hear it and how they rule and the reasoning. I think the Roberts court is really digging deep in the we’re not political thing here lately.

Pam W's avatar

I also acknowledge that neither voters nor courts always get it right. That was the case for segregation. Therefore to me the only logical conclusion is to not allow gerrymandering for any reason. Any other interpretation is overtly political. My esteem for Justice John Roberts has dropped from 60 to zero in 3.9 seconds.

What am I hearing about the subpoena handed down on Ilan Omar? It it propaganda?
