I am truly shocked to see that AI is being used in criminal justice systems... I know the systems are flawed and overrun but surely using a bot to dish out sentencing to actual human beings isn't where we want to use automation.

You have heard the old adage "garbage in ,garbage out "?

The same applies to AI in regards to covert racism. AI algorithms pick up on covert racism in the making of their products to be used throughout the world which is scary, wrong and outright foolish to expect any good coming from its use in the future ,unless, of course , this can be prevented from happening going forward.

I'm for AI if it can be used correctly and will not be a detriment to mankind by being used wrongly by despots.

Clark, Not just despots. Apparently, every segment of society is using AI, and it is inherently wrong. It has been built to be wrong by us. We are the wrong people.

Good point, Gina.

As with all technology or anything else made by humans , there is the probability that it will be turned into something that can be "bad" for others because there are folks who are mentally deranged, (e.g. Trump and his ik), who will find a way to use it against those who only want what is good for everyone, i.e. the good vs evil thing so prevelant in stories being written or filmed for all of our "enjoyment?"( e.g. mysteries and horror stuff). All the more reason to have responsible government to establish suitable regulations and not just laissez- faire all the time.

AI definitely needs regulation ,but, the oligarchs want to shove it down our throats in their time frame , not ours( i.e. We, the People) because they are so much smarter than we are and therefore, we should yield to their sated guidance. Their solution to anti-progress in the world is to disband all constitutions and regulations so they can run roughshod over the rest of us while fattening their tills and claiming that it is just good business practice. This is what I call Robber Baron ethics.(i.e. weigh the odds to their favor and exploit it as far as they can to their benefit).

There have been those in our government who have faught to keep things fair for everyone and that is not likely to change ,so, we need to insist on good government all the time in accord with a compromise by left and right for the potential benefit to We, the People as has been done for the last 250 years in our government to varying degrees , making improvements along the way to insure said regulations become better with time, as we strive for a more perfect union.

What I am talking about here is maintaining a sound democracy and federal system that works as a check and balance against despotism, authoritarianism, totalitarianism, etc. and continues to guarantee the exitence of the entitlements such as ,social security, medicare, medicaid and unemplyment insurance ,as a minimum going forward. There are others like SNAP and WIC and Head Start that also needs to remain , as all of these help our fellow Americans so much, especially for those who would be considered "the least of these".

Thank you for this info. Are tech companies aware of what these researchers have found, AND, do they seem to care? What is our next best step as citizens to help hold them accountable?

I can assure you that the tech companies are definitely aware. Like any other corporation though, they won't care unless it negatively affects their profits. Best step as a citizen would be to have conversations about AI's pros and cons with those around you. Educate those who aren't aware of how this emerging tech works. And of course, vote and advocate for elected officials who are taking AI seriously.

Just for fun, I plugged your “two Muslims walk into a bar} lede in my Perplexity AI app, and I’m happy to say there was no evidence of the bias you refer to, IMO. The following is what I received with the query:

“It appears that your message is incomplete. If you’re looking for information about a specific event, a joke, or a story related to Muslims, please provide more details or clarify the context so a helpful and accurate response can be given. If you intended to begin a discussion or seek facts about an incident involving Muslims, safety, culture, or any historical or current event, please specify, and it will be handled with sensitivity and accuracy.”

The end of the article reminded me of Facebook’s new solution for content moderation. It essence is a game of wack a mole where in my experience nothing is ever taken down. I’ve reported fake accounts of people I follow whose accounts are seen as totally ok. I also have flagged racist comments which also didn’t go against community guidelines.
